Wedding Decor Budget: Costs & Ideas
A realistic wedding décor budget for India — price ranges for florals, stage, lighting and mandap, plus eight ideas that look expensive for less.
Décor is where wedding budgets get emotional and then get broken. The fix is treating it like every other line item: a percentage cap, a price list for the physical pieces, and a short list of high-leverage moves. This guide gives you all three for 2026.
Start from the wedding budget checklist — décor should be funded from its own 12–18% bucket, not raided from catering or contingency.
The percentage rule
| Total wedding budget | Décor share | Typical absolute range |
|---|---|---|
| Under ₹8 lakh | 15–20% | ₹1.2 – ₹1.6 lakh |
| ₹8–₹20 lakh | 12–18% | ₹1.5 – ₹3.5 lakh |
| ₹20 lakh+ | 10–15% | ₹3 lakh upwards |
Minimums matter more than percentages at the low end: a stage, entrance and basic florals rarely deliver below ₹80,000–₹1.2 lakh in a metro, regardless of budget.
What the pieces actually cost (2026 metro ranges)
- Stage setup (florals + backdrop): ₹40,000 – ₹3 lakh
- Mandap or mandap-style structure: ₹30,000 – ₹2.5 lakh (fresh flowers at the top end)
- Entrance and welcome arch: ₹15,000 – ₹1.5 lakh
- Table centrepieces (per table): ₹1,500 – ₹8,000
- Lighting package (warm wash + pinspots): ₹25,000 – ₹2 lakh
- Draping and fabric treatment: ₹20,000 – ₹1.5 lakh
- Haldi / mehndi-specific setup: ₹10,000 – ₹80,000
Fresh flowers dominate cost because they are perishable and labour-heavy. A mixed fresh-and-artificial design with fresh flowers only at focal points typically lands 25–35% lower than full-fresh.
Eight ideas that look expensive for less
- Light before flowers. A warm lighting wash with two pin-spots on the stage reads premium even with minimal florals.
- One focal point per function. Stage for reception, entrance for mehndi — never both at full scale.
- Seasonal, local flowers. Marigold, tuberose and seasonal greens cost a fraction of imported roses and orchids.
- Draping over structures. Fabric transforms community halls for far less than floral walls.
- Repurpose across functions. Mehndi centrepieces become reception table pieces with a quick refresh.
- Printed signage and menus. ₹5,000 of good print design makes the whole event feel designed.
- Cluster, don’t spread. Dense floral clusters at eye level beat evenly scattered low spend.
- Escort the guest journey. Entrance → stage → tables. Guests photograph these three; spend there.
Timeline: when to lock what
- 6 months out: décor vendor shortlisted, theme reference deck agreed, stage design blocked.
- 3 months out: flower selections confirmed against seasonality, lighting plan finalised with the venue’s power points.
- 1 month out: walkthrough at the actual hall, final headcount for centrepieces, weather backup for outdoor setups.
- 1 week out: confirm delivery windows, generator needs, and who on the vendor side has decision authority on the day.
Venue constraints drive all of this — ceiling height, hanging-point rules and open-flame policies differ by hall. Check them in your venue selection checklist before approving any design.
Where couples overspend
- Floral walls everywhere. One photo moment, not every wall.
- Peak-season fresh flowers in off-season colours. Design to the season’s supply, not the Pinterest board’s.
- Custom structures for one function. Rent instead of build whenever the format allows.
- No buffer for weather. Outdoor functions need a written tenting and wind plan — add 5–8% for it.
The bottom line
Cap décor at 12–18% of the wedding budget, spend lighting-first, concentrate flowers at focal points, and book the décor vendor the week the venue is signed. For the payment schedule that keeps this line from drifting, use the 12-month wedding timeline.
